Our Programmes

(1)
Data Logging Workshop for Sec 1

The data logging workshop is conducted annually for all Sec 1 Express and Normal Academic students. The workshop not only aims to equip students with the skills to gather and analyse data using ICT tools such as data loggers and iPads, it also aspires to excite young minds in their search for answers and understanding in the learning of science. During the workshop, students are introduced to the concept of pH and taught how to operate the data loggers using pH sensors. After which, students are tasked to work in pairs to classify various common household substances based on the degree of acidity or alkalinity measured using a pH sensor. Students are highly engaged during the hands-on sessions and are able to bring the learning back to their classroom.

(2) Angry Catapult Competition for Sec 2 2012

The “Angry Catapult” competition was opened to all Sec 2 Science students as part of their June holidays enrichment project. This competition aimed to provide students with the opportunity to learn beyond what is in their textbooks. In groups, students were taught how to construct a basic catapult using concepts of forces, energy and projectile motion. From there, the groups went on to explore and improvised their designs for the competition. On the day of the competition, a total of 23 teams participated in the event at the parade square.  Each team was given five lives to knock down plastic cups that were stacked up 4 meters away, using their catapult. The team which knocked down the stacked cups the most number of times emerged as the winner. Despite the hot weather, all students had lots of fun and an enriching learning experience that day.

(3) Alternative Assessment

Alternative assessment was introduced in 2010 as part of the department effort to value-add the learning of science in Canberra Secondary. Traditional pen and paper assessment is an effective tool to measure the extent of how much knowledge is gained by the students. This, however, is not effective in measuring other facets of scientific learning such as practical and research skills and attitudes. Here in Canberra Secondary, we strongly believe that these components are essential and critical in preparing our students for the future. To help develop and assess these components effectively, our Science teachers introduced a variety of performance based assessments such as Practical Assessment for Lower Secondary Science, Model Making, and Inquiry-Based Learning Projects.
